This week in reading, we read a story called, “The Big Blue Ox.” We practiced reading and writing words with the short “o” sound.  We also talked about the “setting” of a story and the “naming part” and the “action part” of a sentence.

In math, we have continued to write and solve subtraction stories and number sentences. We also solved math sentences with ten frames.

We have started coding in first grade with Bee Bots! Students have been coding the “Bee Bot” to go to the square that they choose. This week, we rolled the dice, added the numbers and then coded the Bee Bot to go the square with the answer.

We have been working with chromebooks. We can log in, go to our drive, open a google doc, change the font and size AND insert a picture! We also spent a little time on animation.

Next week is the last week for our reading incentive program. Don’t forget to send in your student’s reading minutes!

This week in reading, we read a story called, “Sam, Come Back!” We practiced reading and writing words with the short a sound, like “cat” and “mat”  and read words that ended with “ck,” like “pack” and “sack.”  We also talked about what a sentence is and what it has to have.

In math, we are working on subtraction .  We practiced finding missing parts of a whole number up to nine. We also created and solved subtraction sentences with manipulatives, stories and on paper.

In Social Studies we read a book about Christopher Columbus. We talked about why he took the trip, where he thought he landed and where he landed instead. We also know he took three ships.

In science, we are still working in our tree journal. This week we read a book about the trees in the fall. We learned why the leaves change color and eventually fall off the tree.
