ferris wheelThis week read a non fiction story about Simple Machines. To compliment our unit, we created ferris wheels with the Fab@School Maker Space software. We discovered that a Ferris Wheel uses a wheel and axle and a lever and a fulcrum.  We also practiced reading words with “oi” and “oy.”

max rulerIn science, we are learning about sound vibrations. We created the sounds of a rainstorm by clapping our hands and stomping our feet. We also tried to recreate the sound of a ball bouncing to match an animated ball we created on our computer screen. After trying many different objects, we found that flicking the end of a ruler sounded like a ball bouncing. It was much hard than we thought to match the sound to the animation.

In math we are practicing our math facts and learning how to tell time to the hour and the half hour.

timeWe also performed our Spring Concert last Friday.

Don’t forget next Friday, June 2, is our field trip to Stony Brook Nature center. Be sure your permission slip has been sent in to the office. Also, please dress your child in long pants and sneakers as we will be walking through the woods. They can bring shorts to change into later if they wish. Also, don’t forget June 9th is Field Day!

little bits 1We had such a fun week! We tried some new technology  that we really enjoyed. The first thing we tried were “Little Bits.” These are small electronic building blocks that lets students explore, build and invent. The problem we had to solve was how to connect the blocks to make a flashlight.  Some of the students continued to explore and figured out how to make the flashlights blink!

We also had the opportunity to use “Ozobots.” Ozobots are small smart robots. Students are able to color code the robots.  We block coding with the Bee Bots.  We got to teach our fifth grade reading buddies how to code the Bee Bots this week too.

This week in reading, we read a story called, “The Lady in the Moon.” It is a story about how children in China celebrate the Moon Festival. We talked about traditions that we celebrate in our families.  We also practiced reading and writing long “i” words and words that began with “kn” and “wr.”

In math, we have been working on place value and adding groups of ten. In some questions, we had to regroup the numbers in order to solve the problem.  In science we have been learning about the moon to go along with our story this week. We will be starting our water unit next week.

This week in reading, we read a story called, “The Dot,’ by Peter H. Reynolds.  The book inspired us to create our own dots. We drew dots, painted dots, created dots with Kid Pix and with the 3Doodler 3D pen. Our favorite dot inspiration came when we discovered that we could transform our “dots” into cylinders with the Fab@School Maker Studio software.

We also practiced reading and writing long “e” words and learned what an adjective was.  In math we are continuing to work with the hundred’s chart. We compared numbers with greater than and less than symbols and ordered numbers from least to greatest.

In science, we were visited by a marine biologist. We learned all about ocean animals that live in the North Atlantic Ocean. We got to see some live animals as well.

We were also visited by some students from the Norfolk Agricultural School. The students taught the first graders about planting.  We planted lettuce in small containers and we will transplant them in the ground when the weather gets warmer.

It has been a busy couple of weeks! In math we have been learning about place value. We have been manipulating ten blocks to show the value of numbers. We have also been working with a hundred’s chart to look for number patterns and counting strategies. In one activity, we created a hundred’s chart puzzle with Fab@School Maker Studio. Using our chromebooks,  we placed squares and rectangles on the hundred’s chart in order to create cut lines. Then we cut on the lines and made puzzles! After we put our own puzzle together, we all switched and tried to complete a friend’s puzzle.

We discovered that you don’t have to count from one to one hundred to put the puzzle together. We found patterns that helped us fit the pieces together fast!

This week in reading, we read a story called “Where Are My Animal Friends.” It was a story about what different animals do in the winter time. We even pretended we were animals and chose how we would like to spend the winter. Some of us chose to stay in the woods, some of us flew south and rest of us decided to hibernate. A few students looked pretty funny as they chose to wait out the winter in a chrysalis. We are learning about inflected endings like, “ed” and “ing” and we practiced words with the long “a” sound.  We also celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday!

During the snowstorm yesterday, we thought it would be fun to create a Padlet on our chromebooks. We all shared our favorite things to do in the snow.  It sounds like we will have plenty of opportunities this week to play in the snow!

We also created mazes and coded our bee bots to navigate the maze. The mazes got harder and harder, but the students loved the challenge!

Happy 100th Day Of School!!

Happy 100th day of school! In addition to bringing in a collection of 100 things to sort into groups of 10, we created 100 buildings with Fab@School Maker Studio! First we designed the buildings on our chromebooks, fabricated the card stock and put them together.

Then we counted them and then sorted the buildings into groups of ten to create our city!

This week in reading, we read  a story about a girl who moved from a town to the city. Since we live in a “town”, it was fun to see what a “city” looks like. We have also been comparing “towns” and “cities” in social studies.

In math, we have been counting to 100 in different ways. We can count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s!

img_3428What a fun week we had building a snow fort! The idea started by exploring with Fab@School Maker Studio software on our chromebooks.  We experimented with different shapes and connected them.  From there, we learned how to make 3D solids. We were going to create a snow village with our solids, but instead decided to build a snow fort!  We started by creating cubes with the Fab@School Maker Studio, but found that they were too small to build with. We even tried gluing magnets in the cubes to make they stick together, but in the end decided on choosing another solid – rectangular prisms. We went back to the chromebooks and figured out how to create them and then built our snow fort!

Speaking of bees, we read a story about Honey Bees this week. We learned about the long “u” sound and the two sounds “y” can make at the end of a word. For example, in the word “sunny,” the “y” sound like an “e”, but in the word, “fly,” the “y” sounds like an “i.”We also talked about the life cycle of honey bees. We diagramed the bee life cycle using Kid Pix and learned about the anatomy of a bee by creating them with the Fab@School Maker Studio.

In math, we are working with fact families. We learned that all fact families have  three numbers. We can make two addition sentences and two subtraction sentences with the same three numbers.

 

In social studies we’ve been learning about oceans and continents. We know there are different kinds of land, like plains and mountains and different types of water, like rivers and lakes. We also talked about natural resources like water and wood.
